Synergy Copy and Paste issue

Published on 07/20,2011

At work and at home I dev on a linux box and run a Windows 7 laptop on the second monitor. Otherwise known as a dual monitor setup.

To make this setup convenient there is a nice like app that allows the two monitors to kinda like talk to each other. Enter Synergy:

Synergy allows the mouse position to be transferred from one screen another as if the second screen is a natural extension of the first.

One other useful thing that Synergy does is to allow the user copy text from one screen, move to the next and paste it into second screen. Sweet.

What is annoying however, is that after an extended time of usage, copy and paste becomes dysfunctional.

This usually happens when copying text from windows to linux.

I found a solution that seems to resolve this issue every time:

  1. Copy Text from Windows Screen
  2. Move to Linux screen
  3. Open Mozilla Thunderbird
  4. Create a new message
  5. Paste text into the Subject line of the message
  6. Copy text from the message line and paste to where ever you please
  7. VOILA

As of writing, I'm using Synergy 1.3.1 server (linux) and Synergy 1.3.4 client (windows) and can not confirm if the newest version has resolved this issue yet.

I'll keep you posted.

Update:

[2011-08-04] Updating to the latest Synergy Client (1.3.7, Windows 64-bit) has not seemed to have made any impact.

If anything, it may have reduced the occurence but the issue still exists.
